Between light and matter 20/21
"Between Light and Matter" is a series that I began almost at the end of 2020 in the city of Guadalajara and its surroundings, at the dawn of the pandemic, in order to lower the level of anxiety that haunted me by going for long walks and sessions of meditation. But its origin actually dates back to 1996, the year in which I moved to New York City to study art history. In that year, I made a series of interventions in various parks in Manhattan and Long Island in the spirit of urban Land Art. The piece that detonated everything is titled Umbral and was made in Central Park during that same year.
The current series consists of finding the indicated trees or pines either by age, composition or shape and to subsequently intervene the landscape with a series of mirrors or circular reflective metallic materials, placing them at the base, near the roots of the trees, to absorb the light that is reflected in the tree’s bases. The purpose of using these materials that absorb and reflect light is to generate a kind of passage through the trees evoking a kind of bridge between life and death, since the tree is recognized as a symbol of life and the tunnel of light as a conduit to another life or another dimension.
"Between light and matter" es una serie que comencé casi a finales del año 2020 en la ciudad de Guadalajara, Jalisco y sus alrededores en el albor de la pandemia, en pos de bajar el nivel de ansiedad que me rondaba a partir de largas caminatas y sesiones de meditación, pero su origen en realidad se remonta hacia el año 1996, año en el que me mudé a la ciudad de Nueva York a estudiar historia del arte, en ese año realicé una serie de intervenciones en diversos parques de Manhattan y Long Island en un espíritu de Land Art citadino, la pieza que detonó todo lleva como título Umbral y fue realizada en Central Park ese mismo año.
La serie en curso consiste en encontrar los arboles o pinos indicados ya sea por edad o composición o forma para posteriormente intervenir el paisaje con una serie de espejos o materiales metálicos reflejantes circulares, colocándolos en la base cerca de sus raíces, para absorber la luz que es reflejada en sus bases. El objeto de utilizar estos materiales que absorben y reflejan luz, es el de generar una especie de pasajes a través de los árboles evocando una especie de puente entre la vida y la muerte, ya que el árbol se reconoce como símbolo de vida y el túnel de luz como conducto a otra vida u otra dimensión.
