Making Varnish // Haciendo Barniz
Making Varnish is a series of digital photographs that document the traditional process of making damar varnish. Damar varnish is used to protect the surface of oil paintings from airborne contaminants and its first recorded use in Western art was in the early 19th century. The recipe used in this tutorial was taken from The Artist's Handbook of Materials and Techniques written by Ralph Mayer and was first published in 1940. The Artist’s Handbook was referred to as the "artist's bible" by American Artist Magazine and details many painting recipes and techniques from the beginning of recorded western art-making practices.
The work acts as a dual purpose didactic by being both an informative tutorial and also commenting on the current health and political climate as well as the unethical practices of large corporations.
Haciendo Barniz es una serie de fotografías digitales que documentan el proceso tradicional de hacer barniz damar. El barniz damar es usado para proteger la superficie de pinturas al óleo de contaminantes en el aire y su primer uso registrado en el arte Occidental fue a principios del Siglo XIX. La receta usada en este tutorial fue tomada del libro Materiales y Técnicas del Arte, escrito por Ralph Mayer y publicado en su primera edición en 1940. A este libro se le refirió como "la biblia del artista" por la revista American Artist Magazine y detalla bastantes recetas y técnicas de los inicios de las prácticas artísticas registradas en Occidente.
La obra actúa como una didáctica de doble propósito al ser un tutorial informativo y al mismo tiempo comentar sobre el actual estado de salud y política, así como las prácticas poco éticas de las grandes corporaciones.
